Andalusian patios

They are Patrimony of the Humanity.

Due to the dry and hot climate of Cordoba, the inhabitants of the city, first the Romans and later the Muslims, adapted the typology of popular house to the needs, centering the house around a patio, which normally had a fountain in the center and in many occasions a well that collected the rainwater.
The Muslims readjusted this scheme by entering the house from the street through a hallway and placing abundant vegetation to increase the feeling of freshness.

The orange flower (azahar)

The word azahar (orange flower) has its origin in the classic Arabic az-zahr (white flowers). In Spanish the word azahar only refears to the flowers of the citric trees, such as orange or lemon tree.

Orange tress, and indeed the azahar, are visible in every corner of the city of Cordoba. Opposite the hotel is place the Mosque-Cathedral. In its patio we can found more than 80 orange trees that spread the scent of its flower when the season comes and invade every corner of the Judería with its peculiar aroma.

The Mosque and its patio were, in words of the Cordoban writer Antonio Gala, “the heart of Cordoba when cordoba was the heart of the world”.
